Critical Mass, the Norwegian Conference on Skepticism

Each month there are between two and six “alternative” expositions in Norway. Several famous people show either directly or indirectly that they believe in the supernatural, and the media cover supernatural claims mostly uncritically.

Kritisk masse (Critical Mass), The Norwegian Conference on Skepticism, was established as a reaction to this. A large part of the commitment comes from indignation at seeing how cynical many of those operating on the “alternative market” are. Scientific skepticism is at the intersection between science communication and consumer protection, and one of our goals is to make people better consumers and better critical thinkers. We want to give people a mental “skeptical toolbox” so that they are better equipped to evaluate treatments and products on the market critically. At the same time, we want to evoke interest in science and the natural world and to convey the joy, depth and richness that these can offer.

Kritisk masse is organized by the independent, non-profit organization Kritisk masse. When the conference was organized for the first time in 2010, it was the first time that a conference on skepticism had been organized in Norway.
